What makes a “Qualified Tutor”? The Five-Point Check
Parents deserve to know they’re hiring someone safe and capable. Tutors deserve to feel confident and protected. Our membership brings both sides together using a clear, professional standard.
When you become a member, we support you through every step so you can meet these expectations and display the badge with confidence.
“I stopped feeling alone in my tutoring.”
Membership isn’t just CPD. It’s professional belonging. It’s a safe space to ask, “Is this okay?” before it becomes a problem.
Ready to call yourself a professional tutor?
Qualified Tutor membership gives you the safeguarding, insurance, confidence and community you need — and shows parents you are the real thing.
Why join Qualified Tutor?
Qualified Tutor is the UK’s professional membership organisation for tutors. We help you meet safeguarding and DBS expectations, continually develop your tutoring practice, and show parents and schools that you are a trusted professional — not just “someone who helps with homework”.
As a member, you get access to accredited CPD, the Foundations of Effective Tutoring course, SEND and inclusion training, mentoring, business development support and community accountability. You also work towards Qualified Tutor Certified status — our badge that tells families you are safe, skilled and supported.
If you’re building a tutoring business, starting as an independent tutor, or moving out of classroom teaching, membership gives you credibility, language and protection. This is how we raise standards in tutoring — together.
FAQs
What is Daily DBS Verification?
Daily DBS Verification means we check your Enhanced DBS status every day, using the DBS Update Service (or equivalent if you’re based internationally). This gives parents peace of mind, knowing your safeguarding credentials are always current.
What if I don’t have a DBS or I’m not on the Update Service?
No problem – we’ve got you covered. If you don’t yet have an Enhanced DBS or you’re not registered on the Update Service, we offer a trusted and affordable service to help you apply for one.
When will I appear on the QT Directory?
Once your Enhanced DBS is verified, you’ll be added to our QT Directory with a standard listing. This allows families to contact you directly and start working with confidence.
How do I become a Certified Qualified Tutor?
To become certified, you’ll need to complete our 5-Point Professional Standards Check. This simple process helps you stand out and gives clients added confidence in your professionalism.
What is the 5-Point Check?
You’ll need to submit evidence in five areas:
- Police Checks – Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or international equivalent)
- Safeguarding Training – Completed within the last 2 years
- Insurance – Valid public liability or professional indemnity cover
- Terms & Conditions – A client agreement or clear working policies
Verified Client Reviews – At least one review from the last 12 months
Why should I become certified?
Certification makes a real difference. You’ll be more visible to parents, more likely to be selected for tuition opportunities, and better positioned as a trusted professional. It also unlocks additional support and recognition within the QT Community.
What is included in Foundations of Effective Tutoring?
Foundations of Effective Tutoring is our flagship training for tutors at all stages. It covers:

What if I don’t meet all five certification areas yet?
That’s okay – you’re not on your own. We’re here to help you complete what’s missing, whether it’s safeguarding training, insurance, or gathering client reviews. Many tutors work through certification as part of their first few months of membership.
Can I really find a tutor for free on your site?
Yes. We don’t charge families to search, browse, or contact tutors. You can reach out to any tutor listed on our directory directly.
How do I know the tutor is safe?
Every tutor listed is verified by us. At a minimum, we check their Enhanced DBS and confirm it’s updated every day. Certified tutors go even further, meeting 5 professional standards including safeguarding, insurance and client reviews.

They’ve gone above basic checks and met our full 5-point certification process. That means extra assurance of professionalism, accountability and ongoing training.
